Data Visualisation in 2017 and Beyond

18/12/2016Featured, InsightFrank Paxton

The concept of using images to better understand data has been around for centuries. It is the computer, however, with its ability to process huge amounts of data at lightning speeds, that has transformed the way data can be analysed and visualised. As an analyst with a background in design, it is this exciting blend of science and art that has captured my imagination over recent years.

Infographics

Nowadays, there is little doubt as to the power and importance of quality data visualisation. A clear, well presented visualisation can convey complex insights in a fraction of the time it would take to pore over spreadsheets or reports. Infographic visualisations have a much wider reach than traditional reports and can be used to distribute lucid research outcomes to a diverse range of stakeholders.

Interactive Displays

Whilst there will always be a place for static infographics, more advanced visualisation tools now allow us to create bespoke interactive dashboards for our clients. These dashboards enable users to drill down further into their data using filters and customisable graphs, all on the go from their laptop, tablet or phone. This flexibility allows users to extract maximum business value from their research and gives them the ability to ask questions of their data as and when they arise.

A Growing Trend

The trend towards interactivity will only strengthen in the coming years as new software hits the market, so expect to see more animations and moving images being used to bring data to life. With more tools at the designers’ disposal, the scope for creating more narrative driven visualisations widens. Data visualisers will need to become story-tellers, bringing key insight to the fore in a more engrossing narrative.

As more ways of visualising data present themselves, we must not lose sight of our end objective. Visualisations must remain clear, crisp and insightful with the key findings as the main characters of the story. Expect to see more minimalist designs, free from clutter, allowing the most important insights to shine through.
