This is a guest blog by Daisy O’Leary, a 17 year old student who is studying Level 3 Business at Petroc College. She joined us for a week’s work experience in March 2019.
I had a week’s work experience at Turquoise Thinking, which has allowed me to apply my skills to the real working world, and has given me an opportunity to learn new skills and knowledge that will help me in the future.
My first day
On my first day at Turquoise, I was given the task of finding up-coming events, so they could be published on the website. This showed me that I had been trusted to do something that would help improve the company’s marketing. By asking me to do this, the people at Turquoise made me feel like they were treating me as part of their team, instead of just a college girl.
Over the course of the week, I was also given tasks such as: writing a report about innovation in market research, writing a trend project on the effect that Brexit is likely to have on charities, and writing a couple of blogs posts (including this one!).
What I learnt about market research
I learnt a lot about market research from working at Turquoise. Currently I am doing a business course at college, and I have completed a unit in marketing. I thought I knew a bit about market research, but my time at Turquoise has taught me differently. I have learnt that market research isn’t just about doing a survey and then writing down the results, it’s about understanding people, why they do things, and what they think. It’s also about giving advice and recommendations to companies, so that they can get the best out of the research.
I also learnt that there are many innovative methods for conducting market research that I hadn’t been aware of before, such us sensory research (capturing what customers are thinking and feeling when viewing online ads), neuro-research (analysing real-time electrical responses of the brain) and eye-tracking technology (producing a heat map to instantly show researchers what customers are focused on).
What I will take away
I have enjoyed working here and have found it rewarding and enjoyable, and it has opened so many opportunities for my future. Now that I have experienced what it’s like working in a market research agency, I can go back to college and have a think about whether this is something I would like to do as a career. I would like to say thank you to Turquoise Thinking for allowing me this opportunity, and for making me feel part of the team.
Thanks Daisy for all your input and hard work over the week. We really enjoyed having you.
