As global leaders in market research, we have extensive experience working in the education sector.
Turquoise brings full-colour insights to its clients in the Higher Education and Further Education sectors, drawing on many years of experience through changing times.
The education sector is one that is always changing. Higher and Further Education market research are valuable tools that help educational establishments understand the trends, opinions and needs of their students and potential students, as well as the perspectives of education providers. This is especially true today, in an age when broader choice through both traditional and online channels have made the education sector more competitive than it has ever been before.
Education is fundamental to our lives and careers. It influences society, the global economy and the business market. But it is a two way street, and these factors in turn affect the education sector. Education sector market research helps educational institutions to better understand these dynamics and to deliver services that are aligned to the needs of students now and tomorrow.
Turquoise is a market leading Further Education and Higher Education market research analyst. We have been working with colleges and universities since the early 1980s, and have seen a seismic shift in the way education is perceived and consumed. 30 years ago, there were limited choices for those looking to explore Higher Education options, and the educational establishments could sit back and wait for students to come knocking at their door. How times have changed.
Turquoise is predominantly focused on providing continuing education market research to UK-based providers. However, Higher Education market research trends are being driven by the fact that today’s students could come from anywhere on the globe. Similarly, UK students are no longer constrained to considering UK colleges and universities but have the world at their feet.
The globalisation of education is only half of the story, however. The Higher Education market research outlook shows that the online learning segment will continue to grow. Given that so much of what we do in our day to day lives takes place online these days, that should not come as a major surprise. However, it brings yet more competition to the education sector, and universities and colleges need to adapt to survive.
Growth is not the only change that the education sector has seen over recent years. There has also been a significant shift in attitudes and perceptions. A Higher Education or Further Education course does not come cheap, and in the modern consumer culture, buyers are both more demanding and more knowledgeable than ever before. This has resulted in something of a power shift. Educational establishments need to proactively market their products and services, just like any other business. Turquoise is among the most trusted Higher Education market research companies that provides the insights to help them do just that.

Who we have worked for in the Education sector…
In 2001, just 20% of Further Education Colleges offered Higher Education – The figure is now close to 90%. This is something that many Higher Education establishments have largely ignored. However, the increase in fees, reductions in funding, more interest in vocational courses and student desire for more flexible ways of learning means this is a trend that Universities should not, and cannot afford to ignore.
Our research has shown that student expectations continue to rise. As expectations have increased, FE and HE establishments have started to talk more about the ‘student experience’. The student is a consumer and starting to act more like a traditional consumer. As costs go up and expectations rise, HE and FE are being forced to consider their offering in even more detail in order to compete.
The fact that we still use the student segmentation model today that Turquoise first created for us a few years ago is testament to its insight and validity. We continue to value their approaches and ability to visualise important information.
About us and our approach…
Our work within the education sector includes student segmentation, accepters and decliners (undergraduate, postgraduate and masters students), course content and accreditation, new course evaluation, foreign student applications, prospectus research, campus catering, competitive set analysis and a whole lot more.
We also use broader tools to get the most in-depth insights into our Higher Education report generation. These include areas such as in-depth interviews, questionnaires and social media research. This is the age of big data, and our bespoke Turquoise Game Changer gives us access to unprecedented quantities of granular data.
Technology is, of course, important, but at the heart of every successful Higher Education market research project lies great teamwork. At Turquoise, we have spent the last 30 developing an approach that combines our research skills with your industry knowledge, adding unique colour to our insights and delivering the best possible results.
Meet our lead analyst in the Education sector…
Frank Paxton invariably takes the lead analyst role for projects in the education sector. As the company’s most recent graduate, Frank is well-placed to understand the experiences and motivations of considerers, applicants and current students. Frank has worked on projects for several universities analysing the effect of offer types, accepter/decliner motivations, competitor analysis and much more.
We currently have a number of ongoing projects within the education sector as many clients see the value of Turquoise as a long term partner, playing a key role within the client’s business planning and strategy, rather than as a short-term research contractor. However we are always open to new business and would be delighted to hear from you to see how we can help your firm stay ahead.
